Berliner Philharmonie

Name Variations: Berlin Philharmonic Hall; Philharmonie Berlin
Landmark German concert hall in Berlin, Germany; successor of the [l1570171] which was destroyed in January 1944. Home to the Berliner Philharmoniker. Located on the south edge of the city's Tiergarten district, it was built from 1960 to 1963 by Hans Scharoun and opened 15 October 1963.
The Philharmonie comprises two halls in two adjacent buildings:
- Großer Saal (Grand Hall) ([l1860703]) with up to 2440 seats;
- Kammermusiksaal (Chamber Music Hall) ([l1902806]) with up to 1180 seats.
Although the two halls were designed together, construction of the Chamber Music Hall building did not begin until 1984, and it opened in 1987.
