The American Sound Studio was founded in 1963 by writer / producer Chips Moman and farmer Don Crews (owners of [l742544]), with with financial support from artist manager Seymour Rosenberg (who sold his stake to Moman in 1964). In early 1970 the collaboration ended. Crews got the smaller second studio, Onyx (9); Chips kept this studio and his publishing company Press Music. In 1972, Moman shut down the studio and moved the entire operation to American Sound Studio, Atlanta, GA.

Notable records recorded here included Sandy Posey's "Born A Woman", James and Bobby Purify's "Shake A Tail Feather", Dusty Springfield's "[m=74378]" album, and most of the Box Tops’ hits.  Elvis Presley also recorded "Kentucky Rain", "In The Ghetto", and "Suspicious Minds" here in January and February 1969. Moman began ramping down activity at the studio at the end of 1970, when he opened [l1119793] and [l623067].  The building was demolished in 1987 to build an auto parts store.
