In tandem with partner Clive Langer, Alan Winstanley was among the top British producers of the new wave era, helming records for Madness, Elvis Costello, and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.

He began his music career during the mid-'70s as a recording engineer, working on a series of albums by the Stranglers as well as releases from Joe Jackson and Generation X.
