Madchester – Manchester’s Brief, Brilliant Rave-Rock Revolution

Madchester was a late-1980s to early-1990s cultural and musical movement centered in Manchester, England. It fused indie rock, psychedelia, and dance music with the energy of the UK’s emerging acid house/rave scene.

Key features:

Sound: “Baggy” beats, jangly guitars, funky basslines, and dance-friendly grooves.

Look: Loose, flared clothing, bucket hats, and a carefree, rave-inspired style.

Hub: The Haçienda nightclub, run by Factory Records and New Order, which became ground zero for the scene.

Flagship bands: The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, The Charlatans.

Though it only really lasted from about 1988 to 1991, Madchester had a huge influence on UK music — paving the way for Britpop and blending rock with dance culture in a way that still echoes today.
