The Origins of West Coast Hip Hop

West Coast hip hop didn't emerge from nowhere - it was built on a foundation of 70s funk that gave the region its distinctive sound.

While hip hop was born in New York, when it reached California in the early 1980s, LA artists began fusing it with the Parliament-Funkadelic records, Zapp & Roger synthesizers, and deep basslines that had defined West Coast funk for over a decade.

George Clinton's cosmic P-Funk aesthetic, Roger Troutman's talk box vocals, and Bootsy Collins' rubbery bass became the DNA of what would later be called G-Funk.

The early-to-mid 80s saw LA's electro-funk scene with artists like Egyptian Lover and groups like World Class Wreckin' Cru experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, creating a bridge between pure funk and hip hop. When Dr. Dre left the Wreckin' Cru and co-founded NWA, he brought that synthesizer-heavy production style with him.

After leaving NWA, Dre perfected this approach on "The Chronic" in 1992, sampling Leon Haywood, Parliament, and others to create G-Funk's signature sound - smooth, melodic, laid-back beats that contrasted sharply with East Coast's harder boom-bap.
Those swooping synth lines on "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang," the whistle riffs throughout Death Row records, the talk box effects - all of it traced directly back to the funk records spinning in California throughout the 70s.

Understanding West Coast hip hop means understanding the funk that came before it.
