Grunge - From the Garage to the Globe

Grunge emerged from Seattle, Washington in the mid-1980s, born from a collision of punk's raw aggression, heavy metal's weight, and indie rock's DIY ethos. Bands like Mudhoney, Melvins, and Screaming Trees laid the groundwork on the Sub Pop label, building a tight-knit Pacific Northwest scene largely ignored by the mainstream.

Everything changed in September 1991, when Nirvana released Nevermind. It dethroned Michael Jackson from the Billboard No.1 spot and announced grunge to the world. Pearl Jam's Ten, Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, and Alice in Chains' Dirt followed in quick succession, making Seattle the centre of the music universe.

The movement peaked between 1991 and 1994, dominating MTV, radio, and magazine covers. Flannel shirts and a studied anti-commercialism became paradoxically fashionable worldwide. Hollywood took notice, and the scene began to strain under its own success.

The peak ended abruptly on 5 April 1994, when Kurt Cobain died. His death cast a long shadow over the genre. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains both lost their frontmen to personal demons in the years that followed — Chris Cornell in 2017 and Layne Staley in 2002.

By the mid-90s, grunge had given way to post-grunge and Britpop, but its influence on rock music remains immeasurable.
